*வேதசாட்சிகள் - (கி.பி. 362).*    

சகோதரர்களான ஜானும் பவுலும் உரோமாபுரி இராயனுடைய அரண்மனையில் நம்பிக்கையுள்ள ஊழியர்களாகப் பிரமாணிக்கமாய் அலுவல் புரிந்து வந்தனர். உத்தம கிறீஸ்தவர்களான இவர்கள் புண்ணிய வழியில் நடந்து சகலருக்கும் நன்மாதிரிகையாக விளங்கினார்கள். இவர்கள் ஒருநாள் படையுடன் போருக்குப் போனபோது, தனக்கு தோல்வி ஏற்படப்போவதாக எண்ணிய பிறமதத்தைச் சார்ந்த தளக்கர்த்தன் பொய்த் தேவர்களுக்குப் பலியிடத் தொடங்கினான். இதைக் கண்ட அவ்விரு சகோதரரும் தளகர்த்தனுக்கு சத்திய வேதத்தை உணர்த்தி, மெய்யான கடவுளை நம்பி அவரை மன்றாடினால் ஜெயம் உண்டாகுமென்று கூறியதினால், தளகர்த்தனும் இரு சகோதரர்களும் மிகவும் பக்தியுடனும், விசுவாசத்துடனும் சத்திய கடவுளைப் பிரார்த்தித்து ஜெயம் கொண்டார்கள். இதற்குப்பின் தளகர்த்தன் கிறீஸ்தவ வேதமே சத்திய வேதமென்று விசுவசித்து ஞானஸ்நானம் பெற்று வேதசாட்சியாக மரித்தார்.

வேதத் துரோகியான ஜூலியான் இராயனாக சிம்மாசனம் ஏறியபோது, இவ்விரு சகோதரர்களும் சத்திய வேதத்தை மறுதலித்தால் உயர்ந்த பதவியை இவர்களுக்குத் தருவதாக வஞ்சக வார்த்தையைக் கூறினான்.  இச்சகோதரர்கள் இதைக் கேட்ட மாத்திரத்தில், சத்திய கடவுளை மறுதலித்த உனக்கு இனி பணிவிடை செய்ய மாட்டோமென்று கூறினர். இதைக் கேட்ட இராயன் சினம்கொண்டு, பட்டணத்தார் அவர்கள்மீது மேலான எண்ணம் கொண்டிருந்தமையால், அவ்விருவரையும் சிறையில் இரகசியமாய்க் கொலை செய்யும்படி கட்டளையிட்டான். ஜானும் பவுலும் உண்மையான கடவுளுக்காக தங்கள் இரத்தத்தைச் சிந்தி நித்திய சம்பாவனைக்குள்ளானார்கள். .

*ST. JOHN and ST. PAUL*

The two brothers were imperial court dignitaries, heirs of Constantina _(the daughter of Emperor Constantine the Great)_ who had died in 354 A.D.

Invited to offer pagan sacrifice & pledge loyalty to Emperor Julian the Apostate, the two brothers replied: *“You have abandoned the faith to follow ways which you know very well have nothing to do with God. Because of this apostasy, we have refused to have anything to do with you”*❗

Emperor Julian then sends the brothers a message containing both flattery and threats & gave them ten days to  “think over”.

At this point John and Paul called Crispus, a Catholic priest from Rome, and their friends  Crispinianus and Benedicta and explain the whole situation to them & after celebration of holy Mass, gave them instructions for the disposal of all their goods.

Ten days passed and on the eleventh, they were kept under house arrest and forced to offer sacrifice to the pagan idols. But John & Paul boldly professed the Catholic faith & refused to worship pagan idols.

On 26 June 362 A.D., John and Paul were beheaded and secretly buried in their own house. Word was then spread that they had been sent into exile _(because both the brothers were from the Royal family)._

A magnificent church was built in 398, by will of senator Pammachius, over the home of John and Paul. It is now cared by the Passionists and is the burial place of St. Paul of the Cross. Additionally, it is the station church of the first Friday in Lent.

_On 26 June 363, , exactly one year after the martyrdom of the two brothers John & Paul, Emperor Julian the Apostate was killed while fighting in battle against the Persians._

_Emperor Julian is called "the Apostate" because although he was baptised Catholic, he rejected the faith & turned to the old pagan religion of Rome & started persecuting Catholics._

_Emperor Julian the Apostate, had a great dislike for the veneration of martyrs, because the relics of Christian martyrs terrified the (evil) spirits in the pagan temples & impeded the oracular answers of the pagan deities._

He wrote with contempt; *“Christian churches built usually on the tombs of martyrs are nothing but filthy morgues and charnel-houses”.* And again: *“The followers of the Galilean (Jesus) have done nothing other than fill the world with tombs and sepulchers”.*
