“அன்னா முட்டத்துபடத்து” (Anna Muttathupadathu) எனும் இயற்பெயர் கொண்ட புனிதர் அல்ஃபோன்சா, “சிரோ-மலபார் கத்தோலிக்க” அருட்சகோதரி” (Syro-Malabar Catholic Nun) ஆவார். இவர், “புனிதர் தோமா கிறிஸ்தவ சமூகத்தின்” (Saint Thomas Christian community) “கிழக்கு கத்தோலிக்க திருச்சபையின்” (Eastern Catholic Church) “சிரோ-மலபார்”கத்தோலிக்க திருச்சபையின் (Syro-Malabar Catholic Church) முதல் பெண் புனிதர் ஆவார்.

அக்கால திருவிதாங்கூர் சமஸ்தானத்திலிருந்த குடமலூர் எனும் ஊரில் (தற்போதைய கேரளத்தின் கோட்டயம் மாவட்டத்தில்) 1910ம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்டு 19ம் நாள், “சிரோ-மலபார் நசரானி” (Syro-Malabar Nasrani) குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த இவரது தந்தை பெயர், “செரியன் ஔசெஃப்” (Cherian Ousep) ஆகும். இவரது தாயாரின் பெயர், “மேரி முட்டத்துபடத்து” (Mary Muttathupadathu) ஆகும். பெற்றோர் இவருக்குப் புனித அன்னாவின் நினைவாக அன்னக்குட்டி (Annakkutty) என்ற செல்ல பெயரிட்டு அழைத்தனர். 

அன்னா இளம் வயதில் விளையாடினாரோ இல்லையோ, விதி அவர் வாழ்வில் விளையாடத் தவறவில்லை. அன்னாவின் இளம் வயதிலேயே அவரின் தாயார் இறந்து விட்டார். தாயில்லாக் குழந்தையான அன்னாவை அவரின் அத்தைதான் வளர்த்தார். அவரது பெரியப்பாவான “அருட்தந்தை ஜோசப்” (Father Joseph Muttathupadathu) என்பவர்தான் அவரை படிக்க வைத்தார்.

1923ம் ஆண்டு எரியும் நெருப்புக் குழிக்குள் தவறி விழுந்த அன்னாவின் பாதங்கள் கருகின. இவ்விபத்து வாழ்நாள் முழுமைக்கும் இவரை இயலாமையில் ஆழ்த்தியது. பட்ட காலிலே படும் என்பதைப் போல இளமையில் தாயின் மரணம், தோல் நோய் பாதிப்பு, கால் ஊனம், வளர்ப்பு தாயின் மரணம் என அடுத்தடுத்து அவரது வாழ்வில் சோதனைகள் நேரிட்டன. கடவுள் மீது வைத்திருந்த நம்பிக்கையின் காரணமாக ஒவ்வொரு சோதனையையும் இன்முகத்துடன் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார்.

தன் வாழ்வை கிறிஸ்துவுக்காக அர்ப்பணிக்க விரும்பிய அவர் 1928ம் ஆண்டில் அல்ஃபோன்சா எனும் ஆன்மீக பெயரை ஏற்று, கன்னியாஸ்திரீயாக மாறினார். ஆரம்பப் பள்ளி மாணவர்களுக்கு கல்வி போதித்தார். எனினும் உடல்நலக் குறைவால் இவரால் ஆசிரியர் பணியைச் செவ்வனே செய்ய இயலவில்லை.

கடும் நிமோனியா காய்ச்சல் தாக்கி, மேலும் பலவீனமடைந்து, படுத்த படுக்கையானார். இதற்கிடையில் `அம்னீசியா' என்னும் மறதி நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு ஞாபக சக்தியை இழந்தார். பின்னர் தீவிர சிகிச்சையின் காரணமாக அவர் ஓரளவு குணமடைந்தார். இருந்தாலும் முழுமையாக குணமடையவில்லை. இந்த நிலையில், உடல்நலக்குறைவு மேலும் அதிகமாகி 35 வயதில் 1946ம் ஆண்டு ஜூலை 28ம் நாள் கன்னியாஸ்திரி அல்ஃபோன்சா மரணம் அடைந்தார்.

இவரது உடல் பரனாங்கானத்தில் நல்லடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டது. இன்றளவும் இந்த இடம், நம்பிக்கை உள்ளம் கொண்ட பக்தர்கள் பலர் வந்து செல்லும் புனித ஸ்தலமாய் விளங்குகிறது. இங்கு வரும் பலர் அன்னை அல்ஃபோன்சா தங்கள் வாழ்வில் ஏற்படுத்திய அதிசயங்களை கூறுகின்றனர்.

Saint Alphonsa, F.C.C., was an Indian religious sister and educator. She was the first woman of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, and the first canonized saint of the Syro-Malabar Church, an Eastern Catholic Church based in Kerala. Her feast day is observed on July 28.

Saint Alphonsa Muttathupadathu, a Syro-Malabar Catholic Franciscan Religious nun, the First Woman Saint of India, was declared a Servant of God by Pope John Paul II on July 09, 1985. She is the first woman and second person of Indian origin canonized as a Saint by the Catholic Church and the first canonized Saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, and an Eastern Catholic Church of the Saint Thomas Christian community. She was locally known as Alphonsa Amma.

Anna Muttathupadathu was born on August 19, 1910, at Arpookara in Kudamalloor near Kottayam District, Kerala, India. She was the fourth child of Cherian Joseph and Mary Muttathupadathu. Her parents nicknamed her Annakkutty (little Anna). Anna's mother died when she was young, so her maternal aunt raised her. Anna was educated by her great-uncle, Father Joseph Muttathupadathu. When Anna was three years old, she contracted eczema and suffered for over a year. She was baptized on August 27, 1910, at Saint Mary's Church in Kudamaloor under the patronage of Saint Anna.

In her early life, she had a poor, difficult childhood and experienced loss and suffering early on in life. In 1916, Anna started school in Arpookara. She received her First Communion on November 27, 1917. In 1918, she was transferred to a school in Muttuchira. In 1923, Anna's feet were burnt when she fell into a pit of burning chaff. This accident left her permanently disabled.

Anna joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, a religious congregation of the Third Order of St.Francis and later she arrived at the Clarist Convent at Bharananganam, Kottayam District, on Pentecost Sunday 1927. She received the postulant's veil on August 02, 1928. In May 1929 was assigned to teach at Malayalam High School at Vazhappally. Her foster mother died in 1930. Three days later she resumed her studies at Changanacherry while working as a temporary teacher at a school at Vakakkad.On May 19, 1930, she entered the novitiate of the congregation at Bharananganam and received the religious habit, taking the religious name of Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception at that time.

On August 11, 1931, she completed the novitiate and took her first vows. Sister Alphonsa took her permanent vows on August 12, 1936. Two days later she returned to Bharananganam from Changanacherry. Sister Alphonsa then taught high school at St.Alphonsa Girl's High School but was often sick and unable to teach. For most of her years as a Clarist Sister, she endured serious illness.

 In December 1936, her health falls off and she was cured of her ailments through the intervention of the Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara (who was beatified at the same ceremony as she). On June 14, 1939, she was struck by a severe attack of pneumonia, which left her weakened. On October 18, 1940, a thief entered her room in the middle of the night. This traumatic event caused her to suffer amnesia and weakened her again.

Her health continued to deteriorate over a period of months. She received extreme unction on September 29, 1941. The next day it is believed that she regained her memory, though not complete health. Her health improved over the next few years until in July 1945 she developed a stomach problem that caused vomiting.

Death:

She died on July 28, 1946, at the age of 35 years. She was buried at Bharananganam, Travancore (present-day Kerala) in the Diocese of Palai. During the last year of her life, she came to know the later-Bishop of Kerala Sebastian Valopilly, a priest at the time, who frequently brought her communion. This bishop became famous in Kerala for championing the cause of poor people from all religious backgrounds who had come to live Thalassery as a result of shortages elsewhere. He was also the person who reported the miracle attributed to St. Alphonsa's intercession.

Beatification and Canonization:

Forty years after her death, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1986 in Kottayam, in recognition of the numerous miracles through intercessory prayers to her. Pope Benedict XVI authorized Sister Alphonsa's name for canonization on June 01, 2007. On October 12, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI announced her Canonization at a ceremony at Saint Peter's Square and she was elevated to Sainthood on October 12, 2008, by Pope Benedict XVI.
