திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் கொடிய மரணம்:

ஒரு மன்னன் போதையில் செய்த சத்தியமும், அவனுடைய மரியாதைக்குரிய ஆழமற்ற உணர்வும், ஒரு பெண்ணின் மயக்கும் நடனமும், ஒரு ராணியின் வெறுப்பு சூழ்ந்த இருதயமும் இணைந்து, திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் மறைசாட்சியத்துக்கு வழிகோலியது.

திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் சாதாரண மக்களின் தவறுகளை மட்டுமின்றி, அதிகாரத்திலும் பதவியிலும் இருந்தவர்களின் நெறிகேடானச் செயல்களையும் கடவுளின் பெயரால் கண்டித்தார். அவ்வாறே, “கலிலேயாவின்” (Galilee) குறுநில அரசன் “ஹெராட்” (Herod Antipas), “நபடேயா” அரசன் “அரேடாசின்” (King Aretas of Nabataea) மகளான தமது மனைவி “ஃபசேலிசை” (Phasaelis) விவாகரத்து செய்துவிட்டு, தமது சகோதரன் “முதலாம் ஹெராட் பிலிப்பின்” (Herod Philip I) மனைவி “ஹெரோடியாவை” (Herodias) மனைவியாக சேர்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததையும் யோவான் கண்டித்து வந்தார்.

ஹெராட், ஹெரோடியாவின் பொருட்டு ஆளனுப்பி யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான். இருப்பினும், யோவான் நேர்மையும் தூய்மையும் உள்ளவர் என்பதை ஹெராட் அறிந்து அஞ்சி, அவருக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு அளித்து வந்தான். அவர் சொல்லைக் கேட்டு மிகக் குழப்பமுற்ற போதிலும், அவருக்கு மனமுவந்து செவிசாய்த்தான். இதனால் ஹெரோடியா யோவான் மீது காழ்ப்புணர்வு கொண்டு, அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பி காத்திருக்கலானாள்.

ஒரு நாள் ஹெரோடியாவுக்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. ஹெராட் தன் பிறந்த நாளில் அரசவையினருக்கும், ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர்களுக்கும் கலிலேய முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களுக்கும் ஒரு விருந்து படைத்தான். அவ்விருந்தில், ஹெரோடியாவின் மகள் “சலோமி” (Salome), ஹெராட் மற்றும் விருந்தினர் முன்னிலையில் நடனமாடி அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். 

போதையிலிருந்த அரசன் ஹெராட் சலோமியிடம், "உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் கேள், தருகிறேன்" என்றான். அவள் வெளியே சென்று, "நான் என்ன கேட்கலாம்?" என்று தன்தாயை வினவினாள். அவள், "திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையைக் கேள்" என்றாள். உடனே சிறுமி அரசனிடம் விரைந்து வந்து, "திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இப்போதே எனக்குக் கொடும்" என்று கேட்டாள். 

இதைக் கேட்டு அதிர்ச்சியடைந்த அரசன் மிகவும் வருந்தினான். இருப்பினும், விருந்தினர்முன் தாம் உறுதியளித்ததை மறுக்க விரும்பவில்லை. தயக்கத்துடனேயே, அரசன் ஒரு காவலனை அனுப்பி யோவானுடைய தலையைக் கொண்டுவருமாறு பணித்தான். அவன் சென்று சிறையில் அவருடைய தலையை வெட்டி, அதை ஒரு தட்டில் கொண்டுவந்து சலோமியிடம் கொடுக்க, அவளும் அதை வாங்கி தன் தாயிடம் கொடுத்தாள்.

இதைக் கேள்வியுற்ற யோவானுடைய சீடர்கள் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று ஒரு கல்லறையில் வைத்தார்கள்.

ஜெலாசியன் திருத்தந்தைக்கு உரித்தாக்கப்படுகின்ற முற்கால வழிபாட்டு புத்தகத்தில் கண்டுள்ளபடி இன்றைய திருநாளின் பெயர், "புனித திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் பாடுகள்" என்றும், "புனித திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலை வெட்டுண்டது" என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது.

Martyrdom of John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Elizabeth conceived St. John at her advanced age as per God’s will, as expressed through Arch-Angel Gabriel to Zachariah in the temple, when Zechariah was doing the priestly duties. During the pregnancy of Elizabeth, Holy Mary visited her and extended help to her. The name John itself was also predetermined by God and announced by Arch-Angel Gabriel to Zachariah. When John was young he lived in the desert and was eating locusts and honey and clothed with camel-hair clothes. He gave witness to Jesus, as the son of God. He gave baptism to Jesus and pronounced that he saw Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove and announced publicly later that Jesus is the son of God. Jesus once praised John as one, more than an apostle. He courageously blamed people at high positions about their sins. Once he blamed Herod Antipas, the Tetrarch (sub-king) of Galilee, for his illegal connection with his sister-in-law Herodias, the wife of Herod Philip-I. Herod Philip-I was still alive then and Herod Antipas divorced his wife Phasaelis to keep Herodias with him. Herod wanted to kill St. John but feared for the people because people were thinking that John was a saint. One day Salome, the daughter of Herodias danced before Herod Antipas and his invitees in a function and entertained all. Herod Antipas was very much pleased and promised Salome that he would give anything including half of his Kingdom, as a reward for her beautiful dance and encouraged her to ask anything. As instigated by her mother Herodias, Salome asked Herod, the head of St. John the Baptist in a plate. Herod was shocked to hear this but very reluctantly fulfilled his promise for the sake of the invitees and arranged to behead John and to bring the head of St. John and gave it to Salome. The death of St. John the Baptist took place at the fortress of Machaerus probably in the year 30 to 35 A.D. Jewish historian Flavius Josephus said in his book that God destroyed the army of Herod Antipas for killing St. John the Baptist.

John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus. He was sent by God to level the path for the coming Jesus who is the Christ. We also must start preparing ourselves for the second coming of Jesus, to stand before Jesus, as true followers of God and His son Jesus Christ.
