கோஸ்மாஸ், தமியான் இவர்கள் இருவரும் இரட்டைச் சகோதரர்கள். இருவரும் அறிவியலும், மருத்துவமும் பயின்றவர்கள். இவர்கள் பணி செய்தபோதும், மக்களை குணப்படுத்தியபோதும், சிறிதளவு பணம் கூட பெறாமல் பணியாற்றினர். சிலிசியாவிலுள்ள(Cilicia) எகாயா(Egaea) என்ற ஊரில் தொண்டாற்றும்போது, மக்களிடையே சிறப்பான பணியாற்றினர். அம்மக்களிடையே வாழ்வதில் இவர்கள் பெரும்மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தனர். இவர்கள் இருவரும் ஆற்றிய சேவையினால் மக்களின் மனதில் நீங்கா இடம்பிடித்தனர். இதனால் பொறாமைக்கொண்ட தியோக்ளேசியன்(Diocletian) என்பவன் இருவரையும் பிடித்துச் சென்று துன்புறுத்தினான். பின்னர் சிலிசியா நாட்டு ஆளுநர் லிசியஸ்(Lysias) என்பவனிடம் இருவரையும் ஒப்படைத்தான். அங்கு அவன் இருவரையும் சிறையிலடைத்து, துன்புறுத்தி, இறுதியில் இருவரின் தலையையும் வெட்டி கொன்றான்.

இவர்களின் பெயரால் உரோமையில் பல ஆலயங்கள் உள்ளது. திருச்சபையில் இவர்களின் பெயரால் பல மருத்துவமனைகளும் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது மிகத் தொன்மை வாய்ந்த நினைவுக்குறிப்புகளில், இவர்களின் கல்லறை சிரியாவில் சைர் என்னுமிடத்தில் இருந்ததாக கூறப்படுகின்றது. அங்கு இவர்களின் பெயரால் பேராலயமும் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இப்புனிதர்களின் பக்தி அங்கிருந்து உரோம் வந்தடைந்தது. பின்னர் தான் திருச்சபை முழுவதும் பரவியது என்றும் கூறப்படுகின்றது.

பரிவன்புமிக்க தந்தையே! புனித கோஸ்மாஸ், தமியான் என்றழைக்கப்படும் மறைசாட்சியரின் நினைவுநாளை கொண்டாடுவதின் வழியாக, உமது பேராற்றலை உணர்கின்றோம். உமது பராமரிப்பினால் அவர்களை மாட்சியில் உயர்த்தினீர். அவர்களது பாதுகாப்பு மிக்க இறைவேண்டல் எங்களுக்கு கிடைக்க அருள்புரிய வேண்டுமென்று இறைவா உம்மை மன்றாடுகின்றோம்.

Cosmas and Damian

They were twin brothers and were born in Arabia. They lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. Both of them were very eminent medical practitioners and they took no money from the persons who were treated by them for their treatments. They were very strong Christians and converted a large number of persons to Christian faith by their selfless medical service. During the persecution of Christians during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, both the brothers were arrested in the year 283 for following the Christian faith by the orders of Lystas, the Governor of Cecilia. They were tortured to recant from Christian faith. But they refused. They were beheaded in the year 287, because they remained true to Christianity. Their younger brothers Anthimus, Leontius and Euprepius shared in their martyrdom. They were the early Christian martyrs lived in Cecilia.

Their most famous miracle act was the grafting of a leg from a recently deceased Ethiopian, to replace a patient’s ulcered leg. Later Emperor Justinian was also cured of a disease by the intercession of Sts. Cosmos and Damian. Churches were constructed in their honor by the Arch-Bishop Proclus and by Emperor Justinian. In Brazil these twin saints are regarded as the protector of children. They are also considered as patrons of Pharmacists and Druggists.
