*ST. ALEXIUS OF ROME*

Alexius was born in the year 350 A.D. at Rome and was the only son of wealthy noble parents.

On his wedding-night, by God's special inspiration, he secretly escaped from his home in Rome, and journeyed to Edessa, in Syria, gave away to the poor all that he had brought with him, content thenceforth to live on alms at the gate of Our Lady's church and caring for the sick in that city.

The father of Alexius, dispatched his slaves to every city in the empire to search for him, & it came to pass that the slaves sent in search of him, arrived at Edessa, and at the gate of Our Lady's church, gave him an alms, without recognizing him.

Whereupon Alexius rejoicing, said, *"I thank thee, O Lord, Who hast called me and granted that I should receive for Thy name's sake an alms from my own slaves. Deign to fulfil in me the work Thou hast begun."*

After living for seventeen years at Edessa, his sanctity was miraculously manifested by a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. which singled him out as a "Man of God".

As the fame of his sanctity grew in Edessa, Alexius fled to Tarsus, to be unknown again, but on his way to Tarsus, a storm carried  his ship to Rome.

At Rome no one recognized him, not even his sorrowing parents or his wife, who had vainly sent their slaves throughout the empire in search of him.

Alexius dressed as a beggar, went to his own father and begged a small corner under the stairs of his mansion as a shelter, and the leftover on the table as food.

He spent the remaining of his life beneath the stairs, praying and teaching catechism. Thus bearing patiently the mockery and ill-usage of his own slaves who did not recognized him, and witnessing daily the inconsolable grief of his spouse and parents.

At last, in the year 417 A.D., when Alexius died, his parents & the entire household learned too late, from a written document in his hand, that the person they had unknowingly sheltered was indeed Alexius, and how he had lived his life of penance from the day of his wedding, for the love of God.

God bore testimony to His servant's sanctity by many miracles. The Pope read aloud what was written on the parchment of Alexius, and everywhere in Rome there was a single cry of admiration, impossible to describe. The house of Alexius's father Euphemian was later transformed into a church dedicated to Saint Alexius.

*The stairs under which St. Alexius had lived, is still preserved in the Church of Santi Bonifacio e Alessio, on the Aventine in Rome.*

_The Alexians, or  Alexian Brothers is a religious congregation which was established under the patronage of St. Alexius, to take care of the sick during the plagues._

_In 1472, Pope Sixtus V approved and confirmed the Alexian Brothers as a religious community under the rule of St. Augustine._

தனவந்தரும் உயர்குலத்தோருமான பெற்றோருக்கு ஒரே குமாரனான அலெக்சிஸ், உத்தம கிறீஸ்தவர்களான தம் பெற்றோருடைய நன்மாதிரிகையையும் ஞானப் படிப்பினையையும் பின்பற்றி, இவ்வுலக நன்மைகள் எல்லாம் வீண் என்றெண்ணி, புண்ணிய வழியில் நடந்து, உலகத்தைத் துறந்து, தூர தேசத்திற்குச் சென்று, ஆண்டவருக்கு ஊழியம் செய்ய நினைத்திருந்தார். ஆனால் தன் பெற்றோரின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கு இணங்கி, புண்ணியவதியான ஒரு பணக்காரப் பெண்ணை மணமுடித்தார். அன்றிரவே, தேவ ஏவுதலால் தன் ஊரை விட்டு கீழ்த்திசையிலுள்ள எடேசா என்னும் நகருக்குச் சென்று பரதேசியாய் ஜீவித்து வந்தார். அவரைத் தேடிப் பார்க்கும்படி அவருடைய தந்தையால் அனுப்பப்பட்ட சிலர் அவர் இருந்த ஊருக்குப் போய் அவரைப் பார்த்தபோதிலும் அவர் இன்னாரென்று கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாமல் திரும்பி விட்டார்கள். அலெக்ஸிஸ் அவ்வூரில் ஒரு சிறு குடிசையில் வாழ்ந்து, பிச்சை எடுத்து உண்டு, தேவதாயார் பீடத்திற்கு முன் இடைவிடாமல் ஜெபித்து வந்தார். ஆனால் அவர் மூலமாய் நடந்த புதுமையால் அவ்வூரார் அவரைப் பெரிதாக மதித்ததினால், அவர் தாழ்ச்சியின் நிமித்தம் கப்பலேறி வேறு ஊருக்குப் புறப்பட்டார். கப்பல் புயல் காற்றில் அகப்பட்டு உரோமையில் கரைசேர்ந்தது. அலெக்சிஸ் அவ்வூரிலுள்ள தன் தந்தையின் அரண்மனைக்குச் சென்று பரதேசியான தனக்கு தங்க இடம் கொடுக்கும்படி மன்றாடியதினால், அவர் தந்தை அவரை தன் மகன் என்று அறியாமல் அவருக்கு இடம் கொடுத்தார். அவ்விடத்தில் அவர் வேலைக்காரர்களால் தொந்தரவு செய்யப்பட்ட போதிலும் அதைச் சட்டை செய்யாமல் அர்ச்சியசிஷ்டவராய் வாழ்ந்தார். அவர் மரிப்பதற்குமுன் தன் சரித்திரத்தை ஒரு சீட்டில் எழுதி வைத்துவிட்டு மரணமானார். அவருடைய பெற்றோர் அந்த சீட்டை வாசித்தபின், அந்தப் பரதேசி தங்கள் குமாரனென்று அறிந்து, சொல்ல முடியாத வேதனையை அனுபவித்தார்கள்.
