இவர் ஓர் சிறந்த மறைபோதகர். மிகச் சிறந்த முறையில் கல்வி கற்றார். இவர் கடுமையான தவ வாழ்வை மேற்கொண்டு குருத்துவப்பயிற்சி பெற்று குருவானார். மறைபோதகராக பணியாற்றி, ஏராளமான நன்மைகளை செய்தார். 397 ஆம் ஆண்டு கொன்ஸ்டாண்டினோபிளுக்கு ஆயராகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டார். அப்பொறுப்பை மிக சிறப்பாக ஆற்றினார். பணிகளின் நடுவிலும் தவ வாழ்வை விடாமல் மேற்கொண்டார். குருக்களின் நடத்தையும் மறைபணியாளர்களின் வாழ்வையும் அறநெறிப்படுத்த முயற்சி செய்தார். ஆனால் அரசர்களாலும், தனக்கு எதிராக செயல்பட்டவர்களாலும் அதை நிறைவேற்ற

முடியாமல் தவித்தார். இவர் நாட்டைவிட்டு வெளியேற அரசர்களால் வலியுறுத்தப்பட்டார். இருப்பினும் அம்மக்களின்

நடுவே அஞ்சா நெஞ்சுடன் பணியாற்றினார். தன் சொல்வன்மையால் பலரின் மனதில் இடம்பிடித்தார். ஆடம்பர வாழ்விலிருந்து வெளியேறி ஏழைமக்களுக்கு பணிசெய்து, தன்னிடம் இருப்பவற்றை அவர்களோடு பகிர்ந்து அரசர்களை

அழைத்தார். இதனால் வெறிகொண்ட அரசர்கள் அவரை நாடு கடத்தினர். ஆர்மினியா நாட்டில் 3 ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தார். பின்னர் கருங்கடலின் தென்கிழக்கு பகுதிக்கு மீண்டும் நாடு கடத்தப்பட்டார். மிகவும் நலிவுற்று உடல் நலம் குன்றி காணப்பட்டார். ஒன்றும் செய்ய இயலாதவராய் அங்கேயே இறந்தார்.

St. John Chrysostom

He was born in Antioch in the year 344 A.D. The meaning of his name Chrysostom is golden mouthed. He was elevated to the See of Constantinople on November 13, 398. He was preaching against the extravagance in feminine dress prevalent at that time. But the Empress Eudoxia, wife of the Emperor Arcadius of the eastern part of the Roman Empire thought that the denunciation of the extravagance in feminine dress was aimed at and against Empress Eudoxia. Therefore she sent St. John Chrysostom to exile. But during the night of the day, St. John Chrysostom was sent to exile, there happened a severe earthquake. Emperor Arcadius recalled St. John Chrysostom from exile fearing that the earthquake was due to God’s anger for exiling St. John Chrysostom. Later when a silver statue was installed near the Cathedral for empress Eudoxia, St. John strongly criticized those ceremonies in very harsh words. He compared empress Eudoxia with Herodias, who asked King Herod the head of St. John the Baptist and compared himself to St. John the Baptist and uttered these strong words against Empress Eudoxia, Again Herodias raves, she dances again and desires to receive the head of John. For this kind of harsh criticism, St. John Chrysostom was again exiled to Armenia. This time even Pope Innocent-I intervened on behalf of John but nothing happened.

St. John Chrysostom is respected as a Great Ecumenical Teacher together with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian. He is the patron of education, lecturers, orators, preachers and for epilepsy.
