Saint of the Day : (14-02-2020)

Sts. Cyril and Methodius
They were Greek brothers born in Thessaloniki. Cyril was born in the year 827 and Methodius was born in 815. Their father was Leo and mother was Maria. Cyril was the youngest of seven brothers. His birth name was Constantine but took the name Cyril when he became a monk. Cyril was a master of theology and got very good knowledge in Arabic and Hebrew. Cyril also took an active role in his relations with the other two monotheist religions Islam and Judaism. Byzantine Emperor Michael-III sent Cyril and Methodius to Moravia to the Eastern Church to give assistance in ecclesiastical matters there, since the Prince Ratislav of Great Moravia expelled all Roman Church Missionaries from Moravia. Cyril and Methodius devised the Glagolitic Alphabet, the first alphabet to be used for Slavonic manuscripts. Glagolitic alphabet was suited to match the specific features of Slavic language. The Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets based primarily on the Greek writings of the century are the oldest known Slavic alphabets and were created by the two brothers and their students. They also wrote the first Slavic Civil Code, which was used in Great Moravia. Anasthasius later called Cyril the teacher of the Apostolic See and the brothers are known as the Apostle of Slavs. Cyril died on February 14, 869 and Methodius died on April 6, 885.
